Materials and Care

Waxed cotton

Our waxed cotton is a tightly woven cotton impregnated with a paraffin and beeswax dressing. It is water resistant, not waterproof: it sheds rain for hours but will eventually wet out in a sustained storm. It marks, creases and lightens where it folds. That is the finish working, not failing.

Never machine wash or dry clean waxed cotton. Brush off dry dirt, sponge with cold water, and hang to dry away from heat. When water stops beading on the shoulders, re-wax.

To re-wax: warm the Wax Dressing Tin in a bowl of hot water until the wax is soft. Brush on thin coats along the grain, paying attention to seams, shoulders and cuffs. Go over the garment with a hair dryer on low to melt the wax evenly into the cloth. Hang overnight before wearing. A full tin does one jacket.

Coated and laminated nylon

Our rain pants, anorak, poncho and bucket hat use nylon with a polyurethane coating or a laminated membrane and taped seams. These are fully waterproof. The outer water repellent finish wears down with use, which shows as fabric that looks wet even though nothing is coming through. Machine wash cold with a small amount of plain detergent, no fabric softener, then tumble dry low for 20 minutes to reactivate the finish.

Merino and lambswool

Wool stays warm when damp and resists odour. Hand wash cold with a wool soap, press out water in a towel and dry flat. Boot socks are the exception and can go through a warm machine wash inside out. Store knits folded, not hung, with a cedar block.

Leather

Glove palms and tote handles are vegetable-tanned or chrome-tanned leather. Wipe dry after rain, let them dry slowly at room temperature, and condition lightly once a season.

Umbrellas

Always leave an umbrella open to dry before closing it. Wipe the ash handle on the stick umbrella with a dry cloth and keep it away from radiators.
